CRTPO Launches New ‘Safety Is No Accident’ Study to Identify
Regional Traffic Safety Concerns

Residents encouraged to share transportation safety concerns through a public survey
[Charlotte, N.C.] – The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO)
has announced the launch of Safety is No Accident, a new initiative focused on understanding
roadway safety concerns and developing a regional plan to reduce serious traffic injuries and
fatalities.

Phase I of the study invites residents to share feedback on existing conditions and safety
concerns through an online survey. The survey will be open from September 14 – October
25 and can be found at www.SafeStreetsForUs.com.

“The people who use our roads every day have a firsthand understanding of where safety
concerns exist and what makes a location challenging to navigate,” said Will Snyder, Project
Implementation Planner for the CRTPO. “We want to hear directly from our communities
about what they are experiencing so we can develop a plan that reflects the real safety needs of
the CRTPO planning area.”

The Safety is No Accident study will roll out in multiple phases, with residents invited to
participate throughout the process. Public input gathered during Phase I will provide valuable
insight into the community's experience and help inform the development of the CRTPO's
Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP), a regional plan designed to identify roadway
safety concerns and develop strategies to reduce serious traffic injuries and fatalities.
The study is funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads
for All (SS4A) program and will involve all 24 CRTPO member jurisdictions across Iredell,
Mecklenburg and Union counties.

About SS4A Grants
The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program funds projects to plan, demonstrate, and
implement transportation safety improvements to prevent deaths and serious injuries on American
roadways. SS4A requires an eligible Safety Action Plan be in place before a community can apply
for capital funding to implement projects. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created this
multibillion-dollar grant program and adopted the National Roadway Safety Strategy to take a
holistic view of how user behavior, infrastructure condition and design, and incident response
influence safe transportation outcomes.

The CRTPO is the federally designated metropolitan planning organization for the Charlotte urban
area, which includes Iredell, Mecklenburg, and the urban portion of Union County. More
