The Town of Weddington is one of four municipalities to receive an Excellence Award for Local Government Efficiency and Effectiveness from the Centralina Council of Government. The award is shared with the Town of Waxhaw, the Village of Marvin and the Village of Wesley Chapel for the Local Area Regional Transportation Plan (LARTP).

As one of the fastest growing counties in the state, Union County is challenged with trying to mitigate the many impacts of this rapid growth, while proactively planning for its future. This is especially true for the towns in the western portion of the county. While growth and development bring many benefits to the community, they also threaten many of the values the communities want to preserve, particularly their small town character and rich rural heritage. Some of the most immediate and significant impacts felt by area residents are on the region's transportation system. The member jurisdictions of the LARTP Group have collaborated to create a unified transportation plan to put themselves in a position of knowledge and strength when confronting growth, rather than a position of reaction and catching-up.

The Excellence Award recognizes these four municipalities for being creative in implementing a new or innovative program that is effective and delivers the most value with public funds. The towns were applauded for utilizing economies of scale, partnering to maximize the impact of public funds, and encouraging best practices to maintain or expand services.

The Town of Weddington is seeking Town residents to serve on the following Board:

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board - This Board meets the 4th Monday at 6:00 p.m. in February, May, August and November or as needed. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is responsible for advising and making recommendations to the Town Council on all matters relating to the establishment, maintenance, and operation of recreation programs for the Town and its inhabitants, and to carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Town Council. The purpose of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board shall be to study and advise the Town Council on the parks and recreational needs of the Town of Weddington. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board shall provide a means of encouraging community involvement as it pertains to park use and recreational programming to enhance the quality of life and foster a sense of community through recreational community programs for Town citizens. The basic function of the Board is to promote recreation for the citizens of Weddington. This committee will consult with and advise the Council on matters affecting the overall recreational policies of the Town, the use of available lands and properties related to the total community recreation program and long-range projected programs for recreation and parks. The Board will make recommendations to the Town Council concerning recreational planning, promotion and implementation.

If you are interested in applying, please call the Town Hall at (704) 846-2709 or visit our website at www.townofweddington.com, look under Documents and Forms, Administration and fill out a Volunteer Application Form and submit it to the Town Hall.
